Voor Victor Campenaerts loopt zijn zesweekse trainingsstage in Namibië op zijn einde. Gisteren deed hij mee aan de Nedbank Road Cycling Challenge, een van de grootste wedstrijden in het Afrikaanse land. De tijdritspecialist won én schonk zijn prijzengeld aan het goede doel.

Campenaerts toog in januari naar Namibië, net als vorig jaar toen hij zich wilde voorbereiden op zijn aanval op het werelduurrecord. Nu zijn seizoensdebuut in de UAE Tour aanstaande is, deed de NTT-renner nog mee aan de Nedbank Road Cycling Challenge, een wedstrijd over honderd kilometer. Na twee uur en elf en een halve minuut kwam hij als eerste over de finish.

Pas acht minuten later kwam nummer twee Dan Craven, die we nog kennen uit zijn tijd bij Team Europcar en Israel Cycling Academy, over de aankomst. Samen met de Namibiër had de Belg vorige week het schoolproject Psysically Active Youth bezocht en na afloop van de koers maakten zowel Campenaerts als Craven bekend dat ze hun winstpremie afstonden aan de organisatie.

Last Tuesday our Junior Cycling team met Victor Campenaerts, the Cycling World Hour Record Holder. Who came to our premises with Dan Craven, Namibia 's top cyclist and shared their experience as pro cyclists, gave cycling tips and words of advice and motivation to our young riders. Today Victor Campenaerts @campenaertsvictor won the Nedbank Road Cycling Challenge and donated his winnings to us, his newly found friends from PAY. Not only that, our long time friend and ambassador Dan Craven @danfromnam placed second and did the same and top Namibian cyclist Martin Freyer @martin_freyer who finished third did the same. The Nedbank 100km top 3 podium finishers, all donated their prize money to PAY!! While still reeling from that shock, Nedbank @nedbanknam topped it all up to make a massive donation to our development cycling team. Friends, now, we can finally fix those bikes up and, give our lads a proper leg up. Finally, we can now afford to replace some missing bike parts and put more kids on wheels and off the streets. To Victor, Dan, Martin and Nedbank Namibia : what you did for our program today is more than you can imagine, what you did is give us wings. Not just wings, but you inspired hope, you made us believe, you made our riders start to believe. Who knows, maybe one day, one of these riders might end up on the world cycling stage one day. Hope when that day comes, you remember, you had a role, you led us there! With all our hearts, thank you.
